The Lagos State government has launched a seven-day football tournament, which it intends to use as a crime fighting tool across the state.
Speaking on the initiative Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through his Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports, Atewogboye Adebanji Adeoye, said the approach underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusive development, responsive governance, and youth empowerment.
Adeoye stated that the programme will serve as a positive outlet that would help young adults reduce their involvement in crime and social vices, foster community engagement and also promote social cohesion through sports.
He explained that thousands of the participants have been equipped with essential life skills, including teamwork, discipline and problem-solving techniques that enhance their confidence and self-esteem.
Winners at the event will go home with N500,000, with N250,000 going for the second position, while the third position is worth N100,000.
Adeoye stated that by leveraging the transformative power of sports, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration was poised to create a more prosperous and secure future for the people of Lagos.
