The only public school in Ajaokuta, a community in Kogi State, LGEA Primary School, stands in despair with leaking roofs, crumbling walls and a lack of furniture, rendering it unfit for learning for the children in the community.

The school was described as a death trap by a civil society organisation (CSO) and advocacy group which paid a visit to the community recently, MonITNG.

MonITNG, in a statement, revealed the deplorable state of the LGEA Primary School in Ajaokuta.

“This is LGEA Primary School, Ajaokuta Village, Kogi State the only public school serving children in this underserved community. Built in 1973, the structure is now a death trap. The classrooms have leaking roofs, no ceilings, no furniture, and the walls are crumbling,” the statement read in part.

According to the advocacy group, pupils sit on broken chairs while others write on shaky desks. In addition to this, piles of destroyed furniture are dumped like trash. The CSO also described the school’s environment which is unfit and unsafe for learning as a symbol of long-standing government neglect.

MonITNG also berated the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahya Bello, who used state funds to pay his children’s tuition fees in expensive schools upfront while neglecting and leaving the pupils of the LGEA Primary School in Ajaokuta to suffer.

It also appealed on the incumbent Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, to renovate the school.

“We call on Gov. @OfficialOAU to urgently renovate this school. Fix the roof. Provide furniture. Give these children a decent chance at life. Enough of the propaganda. The real Kogi is suffering,” MonITNG added.
