A gas explosion at a filling station in Thinkers Corner, Enugu State, was successfully contained by the The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Enugu Operations Office, in collaboration with the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (ENSEMA) and the Fire Service on Thursday afternoon.

The explosion, which occurred at approximately 15:03 hrs on Thursday, involved a fully loaded liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker at the Total Filling Station on Alor Street, off Abakpa.

In a statement released by NEMA, it was revealed that the explosion happened while a fully loaded LPG tanker was discharging its contents. According to NEMA, the exact cause of the incident remains unclear, but preliminary reports suggest it may have been due to inadequate safety measures during the discharge process.

The response team successfully contained the fire by restricting public access and implementing additional safety measures.

“Upon arrival, the response team swiftly secured the scene by restricting public access, disconnecting the tanker’s battery, and cooling the half-full gas tank. Their prompt intervention ensured that the fire was successfully contained without any loss of life. All residual fires were extinguished during the operation.

“The coordinated response was effective and concluded at about 16:44hrs,” NEMA concluded.
