Nigeria’s national flag football teams have emerged as winners at the first African Flag Football Tournament (AFFT) in Cairo, Egypt. The competition, held by IFAF and NFL Africa, brought teams from across the continent to compete on one stage.

The Nigerian women’s team beat Morocco, while the men’s team overcame Egypt in the final match.

The Community Flag Football League (CFFL) stated that Nigeria played a key role in this result. The majority of the athletes came through the CFFL system, reflecting years of development efforts. Coaches leading both teams have long served within the league.

In preparation for the tournament, CFFL hosted exhibition matches at its Unity Bowl on June 15 between CFFL All-Stars and Team Nigeria. This allowed the players to sharpen their game and build unity ahead of the competition.

The women’s team received added support through the “Gridiron Gems” initiative, backed by Browns Nigeria and NAFA. This provided key assistance to enable their participation and performance.

From the sidelines in Egypt, CFFL representatives Ized Uanikhehi, Dike Meremoth, and Akitoye Ogboye provided Nigerian fans with a window into the tournament through live streaming and on-the-ground updates.

Looking forward, Team Nigeria will represent Africa at the 2026 IFAF World Championships.

Currently, CFFL is preparing for the NAFA Collegiate Exhibition Games 2025, which will introduce flag football into more Nigerian universities. Teams will receive training and mentoring from CFFL clubs as the sport expands into higher education.

Work is also underway to establish the CFFL Arena, a world-class sporting facility which will serve as the home of flag football in Nigeria.

CFFL Nigeria continues to work toward its vision of building Africa’s flag football future by empowering teams, elevating players and expanding the game. With eight founding teams and ongoing partnerships, the league is providing athletes with the tools to succeed and the platform to grow.
