The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), in collaboration with security agencies, has apprehended eight individuals impersonating traffic officers and extorting motorists within the Ibadan metropolis.

The arrest was made during a routine operation aimed at curbing illegal activities perpetrated by these impersonators, who often mislead the public by posing as legitimate OYRTMA officials.

Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, told newsmen that the impersonators have been a persistent problem, misleading innocent motorists and causing chaos on the roads.

“We have recovered 95 vehicle number plates, ten 10-amp batteries, seventy-five 75-amp batteries, and counterfeit traffic tickets valued between 85,000 and 90,000 Naira during the operation,” he revealed.

Major Adekoya emphasized that the recent arrests are part of ongoing efforts to put an end to the illegal activities of those posing as OYRTMA officials.

He stressed the importance of a fair judicial process, stating that the agency does not issue fines arbitrarily but follows due process to ensure justice.

“The agency issues authorized identity cards to all staff to help the public distinguish genuine officers from impostors,” he said, urging motorists to always verify the identity of any traffic officer before complying with directives.

The OYRTMA chairman further assured that the agency will continue working closely with security agencies to apprehend offenders and maintain a safe and lawful environment on Oyo State roads.

He appealed to motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals claiming to be OYRTMA officials by contacting the agency through its official channels.
