A throwback video of Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has resurfaced online, with the singer speaking candidly about the trolling and criticism he faced in the early days of his career.

The video, originally recorded in 2024, captured the Calm Down crooner reflecting on how online backlash over his unique sound only fueled his determination rather than slowing him down.

“It is beautiful to see something that people troll and criticise me for. And, you know what? I’m benefiting from that. Imagine if I had stopped or listened to trolls,” Rema said in the clip.

Rema went on to explain that had he allowed the negativity and online trolling to affect him, his global influence today might never have existed. “And four years later, it paid. And more to come,” he added.

In the resurfaced video, the Mavin Records star also spoke about breaking new ground in markets many African artists hadn’t previously reached, proudly mentioning his tour of India as a major career milestone.
