American singer Chris Brown has unexpectedly deactivated his Instagram account, leaving fans buzzing with speculation over his sudden exit from the platform.
American R&B star Chris Brown has deactivated his Instagram account following backlash sparked by his viral performance with sports journalist Kayla Nicole. The move comes just days after his Breezy Bowl XX concert at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where he brought Nicole onstage during a performance of his 2007 hit Take You Down.
The moment, which saw Nicole reclining on a red chaise while Brown performed a lap dance and even kissed her leg, was met with cheers from fans in the stadium. Nicole later celebrated the experience on Instagram, saying she did it “for the teenage me blasting CB in her bedroom” and, more importantly, “for my brown girls.”
However, once clips from the performance spread online, Brown faced renewed criticism tied to long-standing accusations of colorism. Many critics accused him of having a history of favoring lighter-skinned women, a claim that has trailed the singer for years. The debate quickly escalated across social media platforms, forcing Brown to respond.
In an Instagram Story, he fired back at critics, writing, “Miss me with that colorist rage baiting!!!” But when the backlash continued, Brown announced, “Ima take a break from social media. Y’all done pissed me off long enough.” By Monday, his Instagram account, where he had more than 75 million followers, was no longer active.
This is not the first time the singer has been accused of colorism. In 2023, two women in the U.K. alleged they were denied entry into a VIP section at one of his parties due to their skin tone, a claim Brown strongly denied. The fresh wave of criticism following the Los Angeles performance appears to have pushed him to step away from the platform altogether, at least for now.
The Instagram break also comes as Brown continues to face other controversies. Earlier this year, he was accused of assaulting music producer Abe Diaw in London, an incident that allegedly involved a tequila bottle and left Diaw with serious injuries. Diaw later filed a $16 million lawsuit, and Brown was arrested in connection with the case on May 15, 2025.
With his Instagram account gone and criticism mounting, Chris Brown once again finds himself at the center of public scrutiny, caught between adoration from fans and backlash over his personal and professional choices.
