The Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Cross River State, Mr. Morrison Ogbonna, has been found dead in a hotel room in Calabar.

Ogbonna’s body was reportedly discovered on Thursday morning, September 18, 2025, by his officers, who had gone to pick him up for an official assignment.

A source said attempts to reach him after repeated knocks on his door failed, prompting the intervention of the hotel management.

“When the door was eventually opened, he was found dead,” the source disclosed.

The late commander was deployed to Cross River only last month to replace Mrs. Rachel Umebuali.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Cross River, SP Irene Ugbo-Obase, said: “I can confirm to you that it is true, but what led to the death is what I can’t readily tell you.”

Ogbonna’s sudden death adds to growing security concerns in Calabar, where at least three other bodies have been discovered in recent weeks, including a headless teenager behind the Cross River Basin Authority in Ikot Effanga Mkpa, an unidentified corpse at the NYSC Secretariat entrance along Murtala Mohammed Highway, and another at Marian.
