Government, community leaders, religious leaders, and parents have been called upon to prioritise the education of the girl-child and instil in her the values that shape responsible womanhood.

The call was made by Dr. Oludare Ogunyombo, a lecturer at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, at the launch of a book titled Global Millennium Women, authored by Dr. Abimbola Olumegbon, held in Lagos.

Emphasising the importance of raising awareness about the potential of the girl-child, Ogunyombo noted that the book offers a personal narrative reflecting the author’s vision of what it means to nurture and develop girls through adolescence into impactful women.

The author, Dr. Olumegbon, explained that the aim of the book was to encourage women to support and uplift one another. She described the work as both educational and historical, highlighting the importance of mentorship among women.

She advised that while striving for empowerment, women should maintain respect for their husbands and those around them, emphasising the balance between personal growth and relational harmony.

Speaking at the event, the representative of the UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Hansatu Adegbite, noted that it is important to beam searchlight on women, especially the sit-at-home mothers, adding that they also bear a cost by staying at home.

“We are looking at how to help women in the care economy, that is, women who have been stay-at-home moms. They don’t earn anything. We recognise that there is a cost to their being at home.

“We are also looking at affirmative procurement, getting more women in procurement because it’s a trillion naira industry, so that they can be empowered that way.”
