Nigeria has reportedly made progress in addressing insecurity, with conditions improving compared to previous years, according to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communication.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television breakfast programme, the adviser said the country is no longer in what he termed the “jeopardy zone.”
“We have seen an improvement in the issue of security; I think we have left the jeopardy zone,” he said. He recalled the height of the Boko Haram insurgency and the Sambisa crisis, noting that the nation was then under a “heavy insecurity cloud.”
He emphasized the importance of context, urging Nigerians to compare current conditions with the situation five to six years ago. “Our institutions are stronger today, and the government has responded more swiftly to flashpoints,” he added.
Acknowledging ongoing challenges, the presidential aide referenced reports from the National Human Rights Commission highlighting spikes in killings and rights violations, particularly involving children, vigilantes, and the elderly.
“The issue of security—there’s no silver bullet. Progressively, that will be addressed. Human rights abuses will occur, but what matters is the response of the judiciary and security institutions,” he said.
He further noted that crime persists despite existing laws and penal codes, stressing the need to address root causes such as poverty, unemployment, and communal conflicts.
During the programme, analysts highlighted NHRC data showing a nearly 10% month-on-month increase in reported abuses, questioning whether government claims of improvement align with Nigerians’ experiences.
The adviser’s comments come as the government continues to implement security measures across multiple states, aiming to strengthen institutional response and reduce violence nationwide.
