

D’Tigress of Nigeria defeated Mali 78-64 in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket to retain their crown as champions of Africa and the fifth time in a row.
The game which was played in front of a packed arena on Sunday, August 3, 2025, with the game evenly matched between both teams. However, D’Tigress soon found their rhythm, forcing turnovers with their trademark aggressive pressing defence and converting fast-break points to end the first half narrowly ahead.
D’Tigress put on a dominant display against a resilient Malian side to secure their fifth consecutive continental title, further cementing their legacy in African basketball. The Nigerian ladies controlled much of the game with their high-intensity defence and fast-paced offence, pulling clear in the second half after a closely fought opening two quarters.
The team’s coach, Rena Wakama also wrote her name into the history books by becoming the first woman to win the Women’s AfroBasket twice in a row. The Malians gave a scare to Nigeria in the fourth quarter, but D’Tigress maintained composure, controlled the tempo, and sealed the victory to the delight of their travelling fans.
The win sees Nigeria retain their AfroBasket crown in style and further underscores their status as queens of African basketball. By winning the tournament, D’Tigress also booked qualification tickets to the next FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournaments, putting them on course for another appearance on the global stage.
