Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Monday gifted Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile, Akure, in recognition of what he described as her outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Aiyedatiwa also rewarded two other indigenes of the state, Mary Akinsola, the team’s media officer, and Mary Oduboku, the team’s secretary, with ₦15 million each for their immense roles in the team’s success.

While disclosing the rewards during a civic reception held in honour of daughters of the soil, who were part of the triumphant Super Falcons squad and Nigeria’s historic win at the tournament held last month in Morocco, the governor praised Demehin, a native of the Ilaje Local Council Area of the state, for her exceptional defensive performances throughout the tournament.

Aiyedatiwa hailed Oduboku and Akinsola, who are both from the state’s southern senatorial district, for their crucial behind-the-scenes roles in the Super Falcons’ success.

The governor, who described the footballer as a symbol of talent, discipline, and resilience, stressed that her achievements would inspire young athletes in the state. He added that his administration is committed to fostering sports development and youth empowerment, promising continued investment in grassroots talent.

He also pledged to provide maximum support to the Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure to ensure the team’s quick return to the nation’s premier league.

He said, “This is a proud moment for us. Tosin Demehin has made Ondo State proud on the continental stage. As a token of our appreciation, the state government is awarding her ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile,” Governor Aiyedatiwa announced to a cheering audience.

“I am extremely delighted to welcome home our brave daughters. Their dedication, hard work and team spirit helped secure this victory. You have not only brought glory to the nation, but you have also honoured Ondo State.

“We will continue to invest in young talents, create enabling environments, and provide the resources necessary for them to excel in all fields of endeavour, especially sports.”

According to him, the recognition and honour done to the Super Falcons by President Bola Tinubu at the national level will, in no small measure, boost the morale of athletes nationwide.

On his part, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in the state, Henry Segun, promised the governor that sports would continue to soar in the state with consistent support and strategic investment.

Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, Dele Ajayi, commended Aiyedatiwa for being the first state governor to honour the Super Falcons players and officials from the state, describing the act as a strong motivation for upcoming athletes.

Responding, Demehin expressed heartfelt gratitude to the governor and the people of Ondo State for the warm reception and generous reward.

“Receiving this honour from my home state means the world to me. As a former Sunshine Queens player, I know there is massive potential in women’s football here. This support gives hope to many young girls with dreams like mine,” she said.

Demehin also called on stakeholders to rally behind the development of women’s football in the state, stressing that the growth of Nigerian football, both male and female, is a collective responsibility.
