The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has clarified that the suspension of broadcasting licences falls under the jurisdiction of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Idris made this clarification while addressing the suspension of Badeggi Radio Station by the Governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago.
The Niger State Governor, on Friday, ordered the suspension of Badeggi Radio FM’s activities, citing instances of unethical broadcasting and incitement against the government.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the minister’s media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, the ministry acknowledged concerns raised by media professionals and other stakeholders over the suspension of Badeggi FM by Bago.
“While acknowledging the concerns raised, the ministry notes that the suspension of broadcasting licenses falls within the purview of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), as stipulated by law,” the statement read in part.
Ibrahim added that the ministry supports the Niger State Government’s decision to refer Badeggi FM’s alleged misconduct to the NBC.
He further noted that Idris has urged all parties involved to remain calm.
“The minister appeals to all parties to remain calm, assuring that the NBC has the necessary mechanisms to resolve the issue in a fair and impartial manner,” he said.
