The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the recent closure of Badeggi Radio in Niger State by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, describing the move as a gross suppression of press freedom and an affront to Nigeria’s democratic values.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, expressed disappointment over the governor’s action, stating that the shutdown of the radio station without due process violates Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which guarantee freedom of expression.
“This arbitrary action is a clear violation of press freedom. The consequences are far-reaching — it breeds government secrecy, limits civic engagement, hinders accountability, and weakens democracy,” Ojukwu warned.
Calling for the immediate reopening of the station, Ojukwu urged the governor to direct any grievances about the station’s operations through appropriate regulatory bodies rather than acting unilaterally.
He emphasised that in a democracy, it is morally and constitutionally imperative for leaders to protect media freedom and encourage a culture of tolerance.
“As President of the Network of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa (NNHRI-WA), I urge governments across the region to ensure that journalists can work freely without intimidation, harassment, or violence,” he added.
Ojukwu decried the growing attacks on media institutions in the country, labeling such trends as unacceptable in a civilised society.
He also charged the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to carry out its mandate professionally and resist undue political interference.
He called on media professionals to maintain high ethical standards and avoid practices that may invite censorship.
According to him, the Nigerian Guild of Editors must offer regular professional guidance to help curb the spread of hate speech and misinformation.
The NHRC assured the public of its continued commitment to promoting and defending human rights in Nigeria, pledging to monitor the situation around Badeggi Radio and other similar cases closely.
