Nigerian artists Magixx and Blaqbonez have sparked a heated conversation online over the growing trend of stream manipulation in the country’s music industry.
In a blunt tweet posted on X (formerly Twitter), Afrobeats singer Magixx accused unnamed artists of faking their streaming numbers, calling it a form of self-deception. “Y’all faking your numbers. I hope you sleep well at night… keep deceiving your family members,” he wrote.
The post drew support from rapper Blaqbonez, who echoed Magixx’s concerns while warning of long-term damage to the integrity of the industry. “The irreversible damage we done to our industry, one day it’d finally come crumbling down,” Blaqbonez tweeted. “For now, let’s keep acting like the charts mean anything more than a showcase of the people who can afford to buy it. It’s like iTunes in the 2000s all over again.”
Blaqbonez further expressed frustration at how deserving songs are often overlooked on the charts due to streaming manipulation. He cited Ayra Starr’s Hot Body as an example, questioning why it hadn’t broken into the Top 10 in Nigeria, despite its popularity. “Ayra’s ‘Hot Body’ never enter Top 10 NG, when we know that song should be number 1 or top 3… but how dem go let am, when she never do industry agriculture,” he added, suggesting gatekeeping and industry politics play a role in chart visibility.
Both artists are raising alarms over the use of streaming farms, a controversial practice where bots or automated systems are used to artificially boost streaming numbers, often to gain higher chart placements or create the illusion of viral success.
