Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has concluded plans to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Sheriff made the claim during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television on Monday.
He stated, “As far as this politics is concerned, they (ADC) don’t exist. The information available to me is that any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP.”
He also said the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition platform for opposition politicians, does not exist in the country’s political landscape.
Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi finished third in the 2023 Labour Party presidential election.
Before that, Obi was the running mate of Atiku Abubakar, the flagbearer of the PDP in the 2019 election.
Recently, Obi has been involved in a new opposition movement that plans to use the ADC as a platform to challenge the APC in 2027.
He attended a coalition meeting and said he supports the idea of using the ADC as a united front. He also said the move was based on careful thought and concern about the state of the country.
Obi has not officially said whether he has left the Labour Party or plans to rejoin the PDP.
The new coalition includes other well-known politicians such as Atiku Abubakar and former governors Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Gabriel Suswam, and Sule Lamido. Former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola were named interim chairman and secretary of the ADC, now serving as the coalition platform.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party, led by Julius Abure, has given Peter Obi a 48-hour deadline to resign from the party, following his participation in the ADC-led coalition.
