Nigerian senator condemns anti-Nigerian protest in Ghana
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, Senator Aniekan Bassey, has condemned a recent protest in Ghana targeting Nigerians, describing the development as “deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood.”
The protest, captured in a viral video circulating on social media, showed some Ghanaians calling on their government to expel Nigerians from the country, citing alleged behavioural misconduct.
Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, Senator Bassey, who is also a member of the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, called for calm and reaffirmed the historical ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
“We must keep the flame of brotherhood alive. Nigeria and Ghana, as key members of ECOWAS, should be at the forefront of promoting peace, unity, and regional integration as enshrined in the ECOWAS charter,” the senator said in a statement.
He commended the intervention of the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, for what he described as timely and diplomatic responses to the incident.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners in de-escalating tensions.
Reassuring Nigerians residing in Ghana, Bassey said both countries were in active diplomatic discussions and had already begun taking steps to address the issue and ensure the protection of Nigerian citizens.
“We stand with every law-abiding Nigerian in Ghana and urge calm as the appropriate diplomatic channels are being effectively explored,” he said.
The senator also appealed to Nigerians in Ghana to remain law-abiding, refrain from inciting comments, and continue to pursue peace and mutual respect in their host country.
