Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has expressed strong disapproval over the renaming of the Charly Boy Bus Stop in Bariga, Lagos, now rebranded in honour of Nigerian rap icon Olamide Badoo Adedeji.
The decision, announced on Friday, July 25, 2025, by the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) chairman, is part of a new initiative to recognize outstanding indigenes by naming public landmarks after them. The move has been met with praise from many who see it as a way to celebrate local achievements, especially Olamide’s global impact in music.
However, Charly Boy isn’t celebrating the renaming of the bus stop. In a candid interview with News Central, the outspoken activist described the decision as “a little bit silly and petty,” suggesting it was more politically motivated than a genuine effort to honour excellence.
“I have nothing against Olamide being honoured,” Charly Boy said. “But erasing my name from that landmark? That’s unnecessary. If this is about contributions to the community, go and verify, you can’t touch my records.”
He emphasized that his work in the area earned him the original recognition and argued that such changes should not come at the expense of previous honorees who have made lasting impacts.
Charly Boy’s remarks have since sparked debate online, with some agreeing that legacy and community contributions should not be disregarded in the process of honouring new achievers.
