Nigeria is basking in the glow of a remarkable sporting achievement as the Super Falcons delivered a stunning comeback to clinch their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, defeating host nation Morocco 3–2 in Rabat on Saturday. The dramatic win, which saw the Nigerian team overturn a 2–0 halftime deficit, has sparked nationwide celebrations and drawn high praise from political leaders, sports administrators, and football stakeholders across the country.
Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun was among the first to commend the team, describing their triumph as “a powerful symbol of courage, perseverance, and unity.”
“This remarkable victory is more than a football triumph—it is a powerful symbol of courage, perseverance, and unity,” Abiodun stated in a congratulatory message to the team, the coaching crew, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). “The Super Falcons have once again displayed world-class skill and determination, lifting the spirit of the nation and inspiring a new generation of athletes.”
Abiodun praised the players for defying the odds to write a new golden chapter in Nigeria’s sporting history, describing the win as “a clarion call to every young girl dreaming of breaking barriers.”
Similarly, the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, who watched the match live alongside Minister of Women Affairs Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim and Minister of State for Finance Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, celebrated the Falcons’ grit and attacking flair.
“Their 3–2 win over Morocco is a testament to their skill, determination and unwavering dedication to representing our great nation,” Musawa said. “This victory is not only a triumph for Nigerian football but also a celebration of the strength and resilience of Nigerian women.”
She further emphasized the cultural significance of the win, saying it “serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.”
In the South-East, Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma celebrated the victory as a moment that “rekindles national pride,” while also lauding the contributions of three Imo-born players: Chiamaka Nnadozie, who was named Best Goalkeeper of the tournament, and defenders Michelle Alozie and Osinachi Ohale.
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Imo State, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Super Falcons,” Uzodimma stated in a release. “They continue to be shining examples of excellence and resilience, making Imo State and Nigeria immensely proud.”
He also noted that the win fulfilled the rallying call of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had sent a goodwill message to the team ahead of the final. “This well-deserved victory rekindles national pride. As you soar, know that Nigeria stands solidly behind you,” Uzodimma said.
Former Super Falcons coach and current General Manager of Edo Queens, Rollandson Odeh, also joined in the celebration, describing the win as “a proud and defining moment” for Nigerian football. He credited Head Coach Justin Madugu and the technical crew for expertly guiding the team through adversity.
“The players showed great discipline, resilience, and fighting spirit,” Odeh said. “This triumph should serve as a springboard for the Olympic qualifiers and future World Cup campaigns.”
Odeh encouraged the players to remain focused and build on this momentum, calling the WAFCON title another confirmation of Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
The WAFCON 2025 final, played in front of a stunned Moroccan crowd, saw the Nigerian team rise from a 2–0 halftime deficit, staging one of the most dramatic comebacks in the tournament’s history.
The Super Falcons’ 10th title cements their legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
