Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, have congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons on their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, describing the victory as a defining moment for Nigerian sports and a rallying call for renewed investment in youth development.

In separate statements issued on Sunday, the lawmakers hailed the Super Falcons’ 3-2 comeback win over host nation Morocco in the WAFCON 2024 final, applauding the team’s resilience, skill, and determination.

Speaker Abbas described the triumph as “well-deserved” and said the victory “symbolises patriotism, hard work, and unwavering tenacity.” He called on the federal government to appropriately reward the team for their achievement.

“This triumph is a relief to our football-loving nation. It reinforces our dominance in African women’s football and is a moment of pride for all Nigerians,” Abbas said.

The Speaker also reiterated the need to revitalise grassroots sports development, particularly through the return of inter-house and inter-school competitions aimed at early talent discovery.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, in his own message, praised the team for playing with passion and courage, calling the win “a symbol of the unstoppable rise of Nigerian women in sports, governance, and beyond.”

“This victory is more than a trophy; it’s a statement about what Nigerian women can achieve with support and opportunity. The Falcons have once again shown us the strength and spirit of our nation,” Kalu said.

He pledged that the National Assembly would continue to support sports development through policy and funding, saying Nigeria must invest in its youth to maintain global relevance in sports.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also joined in congratulating the team, calling their performance a “lesson of hope” and a symbol of what Nigerians can achieve with unity and perseverance.

“Your hard work and team spirit saw you fight back from two goals down to defeat the host Moroccan team by a margin of 3-2,” Jonathan wrote in a statement shared on X. “This is a beacon of inspiration and a proud achievement for our country.”

Jonathan commended the Super Falcons for making history by securing their 10th WAFCON title — a first for any nation on the continent — and described the feat as “#MissionX accomplished.”
