The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council, Ondo Axis, on Saturday sounded a strong alarm over the harrowing wave of violence plaguing Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), calling for swift government intervention to halt what it describes as a growing bloodbath.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Adekanye Mayomi, and made available to The Guardian in Ibadan, NANS condemned the recent killings that have shaken the university community, lamenting the murder of two students, whose loss the school is yet to recover from, followed by another gruesome killing of a female student.

“The incessant killings are a clear indication of a security lapse that must be addressed urgently,” the statement reads. “We are appalled, saddened, and outraged. These are our brothers, our sisters, our future, cut down in the most tragic and avoidable circumstances.”

NANS demanded immediate action from the Ondo State Government and security agencies to track and bring the perpetrators to justice, reinforce security architecture around the campus and guarantee the safety of all students and staff in and around AAUA.

The student body also called on the university management to step up its responsibility in student safety by organising orientation programs that focus on personal security and survival strategies in a tense security climate.

“While we mourn the fallen, we will not be silent. NANS will continue to pressure every responsible institution to act decisively. Our students must not be treated as expendable,” Mayomi emphasised.

The association extended condolences to the families of the slain students and vowed to pursue justice relentlessly. It also urged civil society groups, rights activists, and all well-meaning Nigerians to lend their voices to the fight for a safer educational environment.
