Rehan Ahmed continued to press his England claims ahead of the Ashes winter after taking 13 wickets and scoring a century in the same County Championship match.

The leg-spinning all-rounder recorded figures of 6-51 and 7-93 and hit 115 in the first innings as Division Two table toppers Leicestershire beat Derbyshire by 189 runs

Rehan, 20, became the fourth English player this century to do the double of 10 wickets and a hundred in the same first-class game – before fellow spinner Tom Hartley promptly joined that group by doing likewise for Lancashire against Gloucestershire.

Another spinner Liam Dawson – back in the England Test side after an eight-year absence following Shoaib Bashir’s finger injury – has achieved the feat twice for Hampshire, firstly against Middlesex in 2023 and then versus Lancashire last summer.

The 35-year-old’s recall has given extra England batting depth – he has 18 first-class hundreds in addition to over 370 wickets – while he is also a superior fielder to Bashir.

Rehan is of a similar ilk, albeit obviously much less experienced than Dawson having played just 35 first-class games, five of them Tests.

The Leicestershire player has flourished with the bat after being promoted up the order this term, notching four hundreds and a fifty in nine games for 641 runs at an average of 45.78.

With the ball, he has bagged 20 wickets at 15.15.

Rehan became the youngest male debutant to take a five-wicket haul in Test cricket, in Pakistan in December 2022 at the age of 18.

He went on to become England’s youngest men’s player across all three formats and in addition to his five Test appearances has featured in six one-day internationals and 10 T20 internationals.

Next stop the Ashes?

Elsewhere in the County Championship

Zen Malik (142) and Beau Webster (100) scored centuries as Warwickshire chased down 393 – the third-highest target in their history – to beat bottom side Worcestershire by five wickets in Division One.

Essex inflicted Sussex’s first red-ball defeat at Hove since May 2022, wrapping up only their second victory of the season inside 25 minutes on the final day to win by an innings and 39 runs.

Top two Surrey and Nottinghamshire both had to settle for draws, at Yorkshire and Hampshire respectively, with Surrey one point clear of Notts at the summit.

Yorkshire, who were captained by the seven-wicket Dom Bess after Jonny Bairstow left following his partner Megan going into labour, have slipped into the bottom two.

In Division Two, second-placed Glamorgan beat Kent by five wickets, while Hartley’s efforts with bat and ball – 11 wickets in the game and a maiden first-class ton – saw Lancashire to a nine-wicket win over Gloucestershire.

Plus, Middlesex crushed Northamptonshire by 107 runs.
