A political pressure group within Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the North Central APC Accord, has formally endorsed Senator Mohammed Sani Musa as the party’s next national chairman.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its President, Rev. Matthias Ikani, and Secretary General, Ambassador Moses Audu, the group described Senator Musa as the most unifying option for the party, following the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje. The group called on President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership to zone the national chairmanship to the North Central region, citing fairness, party stability, and the need for internal cohesion.

According to the group, since the party’s formation in 2013, the North Central has remained one of its strongest electoral bases but has never produced a substantive national chairman. They argued that the current vacancy offers an opportunity to address that imbalance.

“Since the days of the CPC-ACN merger, the North Central has delivered key victories for the APC, yet it has been repeatedly overlooked for the party’s top positions. Now that there is a vacancy, we believe Senator Musa is best positioned to lead the party forward,” the group said.

Senator Musa, representing Niger East, currently chairs the Senate Committee on Finance and is regarded by supporters as an experienced legislator with a reputation for discipline and strategic thinking.

The North Central APC Accord said Musa’s perceived neutrality and track record of party loyalty made him a candidate who could rebuild internal trust and prevent factional disputes as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The group warned that appointing a chairman from outside the region, or someone without broad grassroots support, could risk deepening internal divisions.

They also appealed directly to President Tinubu to support their demand, describing the chairmanship as “not a gift but a matter of justice.”

“Our President has always championed inclusiveness and internal democracy. Supporting a North Central candidate like Senator Musa is in line with those principles,” the statement read.

The group’s intervention comes amid growing debate over zoning within the APC, with other geopolitical blocs also lobbying for control of the national chairmanship.

Several youth and women groups in recent days have joined calls for Musa’s emergence, describing him as a ‘servant leader’ with the right temperament to manage party affairs ahead of 2027.

The APC has yet to formally announce a timetable for filling the vacant national chairmanship seat.
