The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the closure of its embassy in Abuja and consulate general in Lagos on Tuesday, July 15, in observance of a national holiday declared by the Nigerian government to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement released via its official X account on Monday, the mission said the closure affects all scheduled visa appointments for the day, which will now be rescheduled.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in observance of the public holiday declared by the Nigerian government in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari,” the post read.

“All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled.”

The Nigerian government had declared the public holiday as part of national mourning for the former president, who died in London on Sunday, following a brief illness. His burial is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

Tributes have continued to pour in from world leaders, diplomats, and foreign missions acknowledging Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s development and his role in regional security efforts during his time in office.

The U.S. Mission said regular consular operations will resume on Wednesday, July 16.
