The University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has awarded scholarships worth ₦1.1 million to 11 indigent students as part of its 2024/2025 indigent student scholarship programme.
The award, aimed at supporting the academic pursuits of underprivileged students, was the result of a rigorous selection process. Out of more than 100 applicants, 11 students were selected based on merit after screening and interviews conducted by the scholarship committee.
Two students received ₦200,000 each on behalf of the National ASUU, while the UI branch of ASUU awarded ₦100,000 each to five students. Additionally, Professor Tajudeen Àkànjí, a member of the UI branch, personally contributed ₦50,000 each to four students.
Chairman of ASUU-UI, Dr Adefemi Afolabi, stated that despite challenges including delayed salaries and the federal government’s failure to sign a new agreement with the union, ASUU remains committed to ensuring that brilliant students are not denied education due to financial hardship.
“ASUU sees investing in the future of indigent students as a way of inculcating the values of support and empathy in the beneficiaries so they can give back to society in the future,” Afolabi said.
Speaking on behalf of the Ibadan Zone, ASUU LAUTECH Chairman Olujimi Dada, who represented the Zonal Coordinator Professor Abiodun Olaniran, emphasized that ASUU’s mission extends beyond its members’ welfare.
He urged union members not to relent in pushing for improved conditions of service and learning across Nigeria’s public universities.
The scholarship presentation ceremony was held at the ASUU-UI Secretariat, Olajuwon Olayide Extension, Ajibode, Ibadan.
