The section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway inward Lagos was barricaded on Saturday by police operatives as part of the enforcement of an order restricting vehicular movement in Lagos State, which is observing the local government elections scheduled for today, July 12, 2025.
The elections are being held across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, had announced that the restriction would commence at 6:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The enforcement, as noticed by our correspondent, led to a traffic buildup at the Berger section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway inward Lagos.
Police operatives were seen preventing vehicles from entering Lagos at the boundary between Lagos and Ogun State. They did this by placing tyres on the road, with officers manning strategic points.
Some motorists who were left stranded revealed that they were not aware of the restriction. Some had travelled from as far as Port Harcourt and Kano, never thinking they could be prevented from entering Lagos.
Other law enforcement agents, such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and military officers, were also seen ensuring compliance with the restriction.
Other restrictions announced by the police, in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, prohibit the use of armed escorts, the indiscriminate use of sirens, and the covering of vehicle number plates, among others.
