Liverpool Football Club have officially confirmed that the number 20 jersey worn by Diogo Jota will be retired by the club following the sad incident that befell the Portuguese international.
The club released an official statement on its website on Friday, July 11, 2025, that Diogo Jota’s number will not be worn by anyone again in the future of the club. In a statement released by the FSG CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, he confirmed the decision taken by the board to retire the number.
He said,
As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt exactly the same way. It was important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention. I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person. By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten. Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore with honour, distinction, and affection the number 20. As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20.”
Liverpool FC expressed deep shock, lowered flags to half‑mast, closed club facilities, and opened condolence books both at Anfield and online. The club will continue to pay Diogo Jota’s salary to his family for the next two years. The club has also pledged to look after his children for the rest of their lives, and a special fund will be created for them
