Dancer Peter Uzodinma, better known stage moniker PBrain, has been crowned the National Champion of Red Bull Dance Your Style Nigeria after defeating 15 other talented contestants. The victory marks his triumphant comeback after he had previously failed to win in three editions of the competition.
The Red Bull Dance Your Style is a dynamic dance battle where contestants go head-to-head in freestyle dance-offs, showcasing various styles such as hip-hop, popping, house, locking, and more. The competition made its fifth return to Nigeria, featuring five qualifier events that culminated in a high-energy national final.
The crowd, divided into Team Blue and Team Red, acted as judges, deciding who moves on to the next would round and ultimately take the win. The national final, held at the Landmark Event Center on June 29, was a thrilling display of skill and talent, with dancers from across Nigeria, including Abuja, Ibadan, Enugu, Port Harcourt, and Lagos, vying for the top spot.
PBrain’s victory means he will represent Nigeria at the World Final Competition in Los Angeles, USA in October, competing against over 50 countries. In his own words, PBrain said, “It’s been a long way coming; it felt like liberation after four years of competing.”
He credits his win to hard work, sacrifice, and faith, saying, “I made sacrifices before I came here. I took out of my money and put in church, I prayed, my mother prayed for me. I did seven days prayer and fasting and I told God that I was going to announce his name, with God, all things are possible.”
Commending the competition’s growth and PBrain’s dedication, renowned dance coach, Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau, professional known as Kaffy, noted that dance in Nigeria needs more support to thrive.
“Dance has arrived and there is more to give to encourage young people that they are global,” she said.
