Following the completion of some major water projects throughout the state, the Ebonyi State government stated on Monday that the greatest challenge facing the state is to ensure that most of the streets are reticulated, thereby providing access to clean water.
The State Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Chinedu Nkah, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Abakaliki, noting that most of the major water projects, such as Oferekpe and Isiagu water schemes, are now completed. He emphasised that the reticulation is “what we are doing now, and before the end of the year, all parties will have water.”
He noted that most of the pipes this government inherited were in poor condition and needed replacement, which the ministry is currently undertaking. However, he urged those affected to have patience, assuring them that the replacement would be quick.
He noted that the Ukawu Water project will soon be completed, adding that when completed, it will serve the whole Ebonyi South.
He said, “The greatest challenge before me now, before the ministry, is to ensure that most of the streets are reticulated so that they will have access to this water at the end of the day, because Oferekpe and Ezilo are already working.
“Ezillo Water Treatment Plant is working, while civil works for the Ishiagu Water Scheme have been completed and will soon commence work on the gigantic Ukawu Water Scheme.
“The Ukawu Water Scheme is a scheme that the government took very seriously because that scheme is very important and as large as the Oferekpe Water Scheme. The Ukawu Water Scheme can cater to the entire south.
“Ishiagu Water Scheme have been completed and we have articulated all that is required for the electromechanical and piping. We shall move forward to the governor this week. So, we are very hopeful that we will start piping and electromechanical work on the Ishiagu Water Scheme because we are done with the civil works.”
He further assured the people of Ebonyi to be hopeful of an adequate water supply, noting that the hope is very high as far as the water is concerned.
